On 12 December, the Commission organised a round table with leading experts on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in various scientific disciplines and in basic AI research. Led by the Vice-President for Technology Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen, and the Commissioner for Start-ups, Research and Innovation, Ekaterina Zaharieva, the discussion focused on identifying gaps and exploring ways to use AI to accelerate scientific innovation and excellence in Europe. The experts’ contribution is also timely in view of the upcoming initiative for a European AI Research Council and the strategy to increase the use of AI by European scientists.
