Speaking at Germany’s annual science and innovation summit yesterday in Hannover, Scholz said he is frustrated by stories of German entrepreneurs given a few million euros of public research funds in Europe, but ultimately tempted away to the US by hundreds of millions in private investment.

This year’s Summit for Research and Innovation took place on 22 April 2024 as part of HANNOVER MESSE. High-ranking representatives from business and science as well as from politics and civil society discussed the topic “Innovations in Europe – Catalysts, Competencies and Cooperations using the Example of AI”.

How can Germany and Europe succeed in securing prosperity, creating added value and enabling social progress through research and innovation? What are the necessary competencies, catalysts, i.e. critical decision points, and cooperation between business and science? How can policymakers regulate and promote innovation-friendly? The example of artificial intelligence (AI) exemplifies how important answers to these questions are, because Europe has already largely lost touch with the leading nations in this area. So where does Europe stand in the international AI competition? What impact will AI applications have on research, production and the labour market, or how do we impart the necessary skills and create cross-industry cooperation for the AI-based economy?

The Research Summit was renamed the “Summit for Research and Innovation” in 2024 due to the expanded range of topics and was held in cooperation with HANNOVER MESSE. The unique combination with the World Trade Fair for Industry and Germany’s leading research and innovation policy exchange forum has brought industry, politics and science even closer together and sent a widely perceptible signal for a new dawn and acceleration of Germany as a location for innovation.
