North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has initiated a €1 billion investment fund. This fund, known as the NATO Innovation Fund (NIF), is designed to provide financial backing for startups in the defense and security sectors. Demonstrating multi-sovereign collaboration, 23 of the 31 NATO member nations, including Romania, have contributed to this fund. Additionally, Sweden has voiced its interest in contributing to the NIF upon its anticipated membership into the alliance, solidifying the NIF’s position as the world’s first multi-sovereign venture capital fund.

Fueling Innovation in Defense and Security

The NIF’s primary objective is to invest in startups from the contributing states that are developing innovative solutions to critical defense and security challenges. Alongside direct investments in these startups, the NIF will also make indirect investments in deep tech funds that have a substantial transatlantic impact.
