The European Commission announced today the finalists of the 2027 European Capital of Innovation Awards (iCapital), celebrating the European cities that are leading the way in urban innovation and shaping more sustainable, inclusive and resilient communities.
Supported by the European Innovation Council (EIC) under Horizon Europe, the iCapital prize recognises cities that harness innovation to address urban challenges, improve citizens’ quality of life and create new opportunities for sustainable growth.
Following a rigorous selection process, including hearings with semi-finalist cities, a high-level jury of experts has selected the finalists in the two award categories.
In the European Rising Innovative City category, the finalists competing for recognition are, in alphabetical order: Oulu, Regensburg, Taranto. These cities demonstrate how emerging innovation ecosystems can drive local transformation, strengthen community engagement and develop new solutions to societal challenges.
In the European Capital of Innovation category, the finalists are, in alphabetical order: Madrid, Montpellier, Valencia. Through their commitment to experimentation, sustainable development and inclusive innovation, these cities are setting ambitious examples for urban transformation across Europe.
