The European Commission has unveiled OceanEye, a new initiative designed to make the EU a global leader in ocean observation by 2035. The plan aims for Europe to provide 35% of the world’s ocean observing capacity and capture 35% of the market for ocean observation technologies.
A central focus is research. Under the current Horizon Europe programme, the Commission plans to invest €92 million to kickstart OceanEye. This includes €50 million to strengthen the EU’s contribution to the Global Ocean Observing System, €12 million for more resilient global ocean data systems, and €30 million to support innovation in ocean observation technologies through the European Innovation Council.
