On May 27-28, the large-scale conference “Beyond Borders and Boundaries” in Brussels will gather students, alumni, higher education institutions, and policymakers to celebrate 20 years of Erasmus Mundus and contemplate its future direction. Erasmus Mundus has significantly boosted global educational exchange and collaboration in Europe. Launched in 2004 as an independent programme, it has since become an integral part of the international dimension of Erasmus+, aiming to enhance the appeal and excellence of European higher education and attract talents to Europe.
A comprehensive impact study, “20 Years of Erasmus Mundus” has been published to mark the anniversary. The publication highlights the transformative effects of Erasmus Mundus on individuals, higher education institutions, and countries within and beyond the European Union over the past two decades. The study provides a historical overview of Erasmus Mundus’s evolution and offers a detailed analysis of its broad impact on all involved actors. It examines the programme’s effects at the European, national, and global levels, leading to a forward-looking exploration of its future. The study combines historical data from the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) with primary data from two surveys, enriched with insights from workshops, interviews, and consultations with over 165 experts at various levels of the programme.
