The EU is soon to adopt the ‘AI Act’ – the world’s first comprehensive regulatory framework for trustworthy AI. To support its efficient implementation, the European Commission has published a call for proposals in the Digital Europe Programme (DEP).
The call consists of the following three topics:
- DIGITAL-2024-AI-ACT-06-INNOV – EU AI Innovation Accelerator preparatory action: This topic aims to accelerate AI innovation by fostering collaboration among relevant stakeholders, including industry players, Member States representatives, and other experts. The goal is to strengthen Europe’s industrial capacities in designing and manufacturing advanced processors and electronic components. By identifying gaps in microchip production and promoting technology development, the EU aims to enhance its digital sovereignty.
- DIGITAL-2024-AI-ACT-06-SANDBOX – AI regulatory sandboxes: EU-level coordination and support: This topic focuses on EU-level coordination and support for AI regulatory sandboxes. These sandboxes provide a controlled environment for testing and validating AI applications, ensuring compliance with regulations while encouraging innovation. By fostering collaboration between businesses, experts, and public administrations, the EU aims to advance cloud and edge technologies.
- DIGITAL-2024-AI-ACT-06-TESTAI – Pilot action for the establishment of future Union Testing Facilities in AI: This pilot action aims to establish future Union Testing Facilities in AI. These facilities will serve as testing grounds for AI technologies, enabling rigorous evaluation and validation. By promoting standardized testing procedures, the EU seeks to enhance the quality and safety of AI systems.
