This new international scientific partnership, with a budget of €10 million, will foster world-class cancer research.

As part of the global Cancer Grand Challenges initiative, Cancer Research UK and the National Cancer Institute (INCa) announce a partnership to fund world-class researchers to tackle the biggest challenges in cancer control.
This initiative was created in 2020 by two of the world’s largest cancer research funders: Cancer Research UK and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the United States.1. Its ambition is to build a high-level interdisciplinary community that can respond to the greatest remaining challenges in the fight against cancer and foster the progress we all need.
The participation of the National Cancer Institute in the Cancer Grand Challenges will give this initiative a stronger international scope. It involves one of the largest French funders of cancer research to meet major challenges in this area in order to conduct innovative research. INCa, one of Cancer Research UK’s key partners, is the first to commit funds to support multiple teams in a single edition of the Cancer Grand Challenges.
INCa’s €10 million investment will help finance the next Cancer Grand Challenges teams. Twelve shortlisted teams are currently competing for up to £20 million (€23 million) for their global research projects in the last edition. The winning teams will be announced in March 2024.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, with nearly 10 million deaths per year2, or one in five deaths3. Cancer research has made huge progress, with nearly half of patients now surviving the disease for more than a decade. However, major challenges still hamper the progress that remains to be made.
