The Leaders of the European Union (EU) and Canada, at our 21st Summit in Montréal, launch the EU-Canada Alliance for the Future to create a common prosperity and economic security space.
2. The strong partnership between the EU and Canada is deeply rooted in trust, shaped by a shared history of human connection and robust economic ties, and grounded in the core values we share: democracy, human rights, the rule of law, the rules-based international order and open, rules-based markets. We are strategically important partners, close friends as well as neighbours.
3. Our relationship already encompasses one of the world's most successful free trade agreements as well as extensive cooperation in a wide range of areas, including security, defence, sustainable development and people-to-people exchanges. However, the world is changing rapidly. Geopolitical tensions, economic fragmentation, climate change, technological transformation and growing competition for energy, resources and strategic technologies are reshaping the international environment. In this context, the EU and Canada are building a deeper, more integrated and strategically aligned relationship.
