The European Commission has launched the 2026 European Capital of Innovation Awards (iCapital), supporte by the European Innovation Council (EIC). The Award rewards European cities that lead the way in developing vibrant innovation ecosystems, making innovation a driving force for sustainable growth, social inclusion, and improved quality of life.
Jean-David Malo, Director of the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency, launched the new edition of the Prize during a dedicated event in Braga (Portugal), the European Rising Innovative city 2024-25.
The iCapital Awards celebrate cities that embrace innovation at all levels, from mobilising public and private stakeholders to fostering entrepreneurship, and implementing forward-thinking policies that serve as role models across Europe. The competition is open to cities from EU Member States and countries associated with Horizon Europe.
The contest features two categories:
- European Capital of Innovation – Open to cities with a population of at least 250.000 inhabitants. The winner receives €1 million, while two runners-up cities each receive €100 000,-.
- Rising Innovative City – Open to smaller cities with a population between 50,000 and 249,999 inhabitants. The winner receives €500,000.-, with two runners-up each awarded €50,000.-.
Cities are invited to submit their applications by 18 June 2025, 17:00 (CET).
