A call to strengthen research and innovation in Europe

Keynote speaker: Enrico Letta, Former Italian Prime Minister and Author of the report “Much more than a market” on the future of the Single Market

This autumn, the newly elected European Parliament will begin developing their positions, and the candidates for the future European Commission will be announced. These leaders will play a crucial role in shaping Europe’s future through the development and adoption of the next long-term EU budget.

This event offers a platform for discussing the vital importance of investing in research and innovation as a way of addressing current and future geopolitical and societal challenges. The discussions will take place ahead of the publication of the first proposal for the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), expected in the first half of 2025.

Speakers

Enrico Letta will share his views on European R&I, the need to create a «fifth freedom» dedicated to R&I in the single market, and why it is necessary to radically step up the investments in the EU’s next budget.
Mr. Letta, former Prime Minister of Italy and President of the Jacques Delors Institute, is the author of the report «Much more than a market» on the future of the single market.

Maria Leptin will join the panel to discuss the benefits of frontier research and innovation.
Dr. Leptin is President of the European Research Council.

Christian Ehler will speak about the importance of R&I investments at national and EU level, in particular for the 10th framework programme for research and innovation FP10.
Dr. Ehler is Member of the European Parliament, ITRE Committee, and Rapporteur for Horizon Europe.
