As of 1 September 2024, Romania will be part of the European Unitary Patent (UP) system. From that date, all European patents with unitary effect will automatically cover Romania. With this expansion, the number of participating EU Member States will increase to 18. Romania’s accession will make the UP system even more attractive: Over 1 000 users expressed their interest in extending the scope of protection of their Unitary Patents to Romania by requesting a delay in registration until after 1 September.
Since the Unitary Patent entered into force on 1 June 2023, the European Patent Office has received over 34 000 requests for unitary effect and registered 33 000 Unitary Patents.
