The Spanish presidency of the Council of the EU has encouraged the heads of research in the EU-27 to achieve a more autonomous, self-sufficient Europe through science.
At an informal ministerial meeting, the EU’s heads of competitiveness in scientific research and technological innovation discussed the planning of the new Horizon Europe 2025-2027 plan, which will monitor the initiatives in this area outlined in the first plan (launched in 2021), for which around €100 billion have been earmarked for.
The new Horizon Europe plan, which will start in 2025, is one of the key elements of one of the presidency of the Council of the EU’s priorities this semester: reindustrialising the EU and ensuring its open strategic autonomy.
Research is essential to achieve this objective, which will also enable a deeper understanding of the green and sustainable transition. Spain therefore considers it appropriate to align national and EU objectives and policies to work more efficiently, and thereby achieve a greater impact.
